Research Interests

Dr. Anastasopoulos' research interests can be broadly categorized as follows:

  • Autonomous and connected vehicle technologies: (i) numerical integration of functions derived from econometric modeling analysis of human behavior and of infrastructure and transportation data, into computational modules of autonomous and connected vehicles and of infrastructure facility agents; (ii) development of multi-level decentralized algorithms for optimal vehicle positioning and reaction to environmental, traffic, and other vehicle movement stimuli; and (iii) development of a collision avoidance control framework for autonomous vehicles in mixed traffic conditions with human drivers who exhibit aggressive driving behavior, using Model Predictive Control (MPC).

  • Advanced air mobility: (i) infrastructure design needs for advanced air vehicle take-off and landing facilities; (ii) willingness to pay for and use of shared (or private) advanced air vehicles; (iii) concerns/benefits and policy implications from their future use and operation; and (iv) relevant anticipated safety and security issues associated with this new transport mode.

  • Policy, human factors, transportation safety, infrastructure management, and emerging mobility: my research blends safety, Naturalistic Driving Study data, driving simulation, mobility, social behavior, green transportation and travel demand theories with novel statistical and econometric methods.  My goal is to drive policy decisions on planning and financing future carbon-neutral transportation service and infrastructure investments, and to promote interventions for safer and sustainable roadway design and preservation.

  • Sustainability/reliability, policy making, and funding models in infrastructure systems: (i) physical/monetary assessment for life-cycle preservation; (ii) impacts and policy considerations of sustainable energy facilities siting (wind-farm and biofuel facilities); and (iii) funding models (public-private partnerships and hybrid contracting) for large infrastructure systems.  My research findings serve as a tool for improvements in livability, effective use of infrastructure funds and resources, and minimization of the carbon-footprint.

  • Real-time crisis management for motorway systems: (i) prediction, real-time diagnosis and management of the consequences of natural disasters (focusing on earthquakes and hurricanes) affecting a transportation network; (ii) pre-event probabilistic risk and vulnerability assessment of major infrastructure; and (iii) dynamic parametric analysis of the consequences and management of different extreme event scenarios, in terms of structural damage and traffic operations.

  • Quantitative methods, statistical/econometric modeling, and big data analytics: my research in data mining, random parameters, heterogeneity, dynamic statistical modeling, and incorporating time/space, societal changes, and human behavior in engineering problem solving, aims to interpret complex phenomena, and most importantly to enhance the reliability and sustainability of infrastructure, and augment decision and policy making.
